Harris County Commissioners Vote In Favor of Astrodome Renovation

After years of debate over what should be done with the Astrodome, Harris County Commissioners came to an agreement on the future of one of Houston’s most historical monuments.

Details so far:

  • The floor will be raised to street level and made into a $1,400 space parking garage
  • About 240,000 square feet will become either a park or a combination of park and retail space.
  • 550,000 square feet at the dome’s core will be used for retail or hospitality.

The total cost of the renovations will be $105 million, and the project is estimated to take about 12 months.

In the past, voters have rejected any plans of renovation and instead suggested demolishing. Others say demolishing the “8th Wonder of The World” is a terrible idea. The Astrodome holds tons of memories for Houston and for sports fans all around.  Houstonians are split, but it looks like we finally have an answer.
