M.I.A. and Zayn have dropped their long-awaited collaboration “Freedun.” In early August, the two revealed that they were working together for M.I.A.’s fifth studio album AIM, which is scheduled for release on September 9.

“Freedun” is the third song released from the album, and follows the Diplo-produced “Bird Song” and “Go Off,”a collaboration with DJ Blaqstarr and Skrillex.

M.I.A. says that collaborating with the former boy band star for her new single “just kind of happened.” “He’s from Bradford, I thought that was cool,” she tells BBC Radio. “I made this song a long time ago and it was too mainstream for me, so if I was gonna have a collaboration with someone like Zayn, this was the perfect song. It sort of takes me out my comfort zone, but kind of takes him out of his a little bit as well. It just worked out.”

The Sri Lankan added that the project was coordinated virtually and she was actually on a plane while Zayn was in the studio.

As for the inspiration for the album, she said, “I came out of a relationship with all this time on my hands and nothing to do. I wrote Kala the last time I was single, in 2007…This was me finding myself again, I guess. I needed to write the record. I sometimes need music, as well. It’s cathartic, know what I’m saying?”
