The area codes used by scammers include 268, 284, 473, 664, 649, 767, 809, 829, 849 and 876.  It is a new phone scam and according to ABC 13’s website police are warning about the “one-ring phone scam”.  It works by using an auto-dialer and the problem comes in when people call the number back.

Scammers call the number, let it ring once, then hang up hoping you will call it back. They hear, quote,
“You’ve reached the operator, please hold,” this whole time they are on hold they are getting  a hefty per-minute charge on top of an international rate.

Again, these are the area codes used by scammers include 268, 284, 473, 664, 649, 767, 809, 829, 849 and 876.

Don’t call back the number!
