Checking In On Marlen Esparza From Pasadena In London At The Olympics

Sarah Pepper

Marlen Esparza is making history in this year’s Olympics because it is the first time Women’s Boxing has been sanctioned and she was the first woman to win a match. We check in with her coach Rudy Silva about what it takes to be a woman in a man’s sport.

It was quoted in “People” magazine that Marlen puts on a base of makeup and blush along with mascara. She also, quote, “puts on perfume before a fight, makes sure to exfoliate and hydrate her skin”. Her coach Rudy Silva says don’t let that pretty face “fool you”.

Rudy has been coaching Marlen since she was 12 years old and said that in her later years of training it was “difficult” to find females to fight against her because she had surpassed them all.

Marlen was facing a boxer from China this morning and although she lost we are still unbelievably proud of her accomplishments. She will receive the Bronze medal and go down in history as one of the first three medal winners in female boxing.

Here is our interview with her coach.
